How to add a signature to a certificate
- Create the signature. Type the signer’s name and choose a style, or draw it. Use the signer’s real name and get their permission first.
- Download a transparent PNG. The high-resolution export stays crisp when printed and blends into any certificate background.
- Place it above the signature line. Insert the image in Canva, Word, Google Slides, or the free certificate maker, and let it overlap the line slightly so it looks hand-signed.
- Print the name and title below. A readable name and role under the line tells people who authorized the certificate.
Beyond the signature
A signature shows who approved it. Verification proves it.
Anyone can copy a signature image onto a fake certificate. CertificateJoy adds the authorized signer to every certificate you issue and gives each one a hosted verification page and QR code, so employers can confirm it is genuine. Need a unique number or a seal too? Try the free certificate ID generator or the certificate seal maker.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a signature for a certificate?
Type the signer’s name and pick a handwritten style, or switch to Draw and sign with a mouse, trackpad, stylus, or finger. Download the signature as a transparent PNG, then place it just above the signature line in your certificate design in Canva, Word, Google Slides, or CertificateJoy.
Does the downloaded signature have a transparent background?
Yes. PNG downloads are transparent by default, so the signature sits cleanly on any certificate background. Turn on “Add a white background” if the tool you are pasting into does not handle transparency well. Drawn signatures can also be downloaded as SVG, which stays sharp at any size.
Is a generated signature legally binding?
It depends on where and how it is used. Laws such as the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS regulation can recognize electronic signatures, but validity usually depends on the signer’s intent and the process and records around the signature, not on how the image looks. For a certificate, a signature image is a visual mark of authorization, not proof. This is general information, not legal advice.
Who should sign a certificate?
The person who has authority to confirm the achievement, such as the instructor, program director, training manager, or head of the issuing organization. Only use someone’s signature with their permission, and keep the printed name and title under the line accurate.
Can I use the handwritten fonts on certificates I sell or give out commercially?
The signature styles use fonts from Google Fonts that are released under the SIL Open Font License, which permits commercial use, including in images and documents you create. The downloaded signature is yours to use.
Is my signature uploaded or stored anywhere?
No. The signature is rendered and exported entirely in your browser and is not sent to any server. The page only downloads the handwriting font files from Google Fonts, and this page does not load analytics scripts.
